Chain control reminders

Caltrans chain requirements can change quickly when snow, ice, storms, or incidents affect the mountain highways.

Carry chains

During winter travel, carry tire chains or approved traction devices and know how to install them before reaching chain control areas.

Do not stop in traffic

If chains are required, pull fully off the roadway where it is safe. Do not block a travel lane to install chains.

Slow down

Snow, ice, fog, and traffic can make travel much slower than normal. Give yourself extra time and avoid rushing the climb.

Important travel note

BigBear360 is a local guide, not an official road authority. Always verify route status, closures, and chain requirements through Caltrans or local authorities before travel.
